Province To Pay For Type I Diabetic Pumps For Citizens
Toronto-The government of Ontario has gone public with its new offer to foot the bill for insulin pumps for any adult in the province that has type I insulin dependent diabetes.
This is a new offer; the province of Ontario has been providing pumps for its citizens who are under the age of 18 for about two years.
The insulin pumps are devices that automatically deliver the correct dose of insulin through a catheter placed underneath the skin.
It offers freedom to people who need daily insulin from the ordeal of multiple daily injections, and has given a lot of mobility to diabetics who are insulin dependent.
The upshot is that about 1,300 adults will be eligible to receive the federally funded pumps under the new program, which will cost the taxpayers about $62 million dollars over the course of about 4 years.
The province is leading the pack in making the insulin pumps available for its citizens, it is set to maintain an electronic diabetic and health registry which will provide emergency information and access to health records.
Diabetics in Ontario have increased by nearly 69 percent in the last 10 years to around 900,000 Canadians who are living in the province with the disease.
