Ongoing Research Offers Both Progress And Setbacks
Washington, D.C.-Research continues on Alzheimer’s disease, sometimes there are signs of real progress, at other times it appears like no real forward gain has been made.
An older drug called Dimebon is showing promise in treating Alzheimer’s patients, people who have been taking the antihistamine are showing real progress in symptoms.
But in other areas, a medication that looked promising has proven to be a failure, and does not halt the progression of Alzheimer’s, even if it does clear out any dementia related amyloid plaques that are present in the human brain.
The British medical journal, the Lancet is reporting on both the treatment and the causes of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is thought to affect about 1 in 20 people between 65 and 74.
Between the age of 85 and 100 the rate goes up to about half of all people.
While research continues, there appears to be no real cure on the horizon.
The antihistamine Dimebon shows that when used by people with early onset symptoms that their symptoms often get better, or are prevented.
This shows that histamines can at times be a valid treatment for Alzheimer’s but it is far from the new solution, as its effects appear to be temporary and last only while taking the medication.
