New York – A new study just published in the New England Journal of Medicine followed three diets for two years: a low-fat diet, a low-carb diet, and called Mediterranean diet.
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA put 322 obese subjects through one of the three diets. They had the subjects participate for two years and found that the low carb dieters lost the most weight, 12 lb., and the Mediterranean dieters scored second place with an average of 10 lb. Low fat dieters trimmed seven pounds in two years.
Dr. Meir Stampfer, Brigham and Women’s: “I think the first choice for weight loss should be Mediterranean style or low carb and low fat. It works for some people, but it shouldn’t be the first choice.”
“The three diet strategies were beneficial for two years for all the biomarkers, but some of them were more specifically better than others,” Shai said. “The good news is that you can consider and choose one strategy, but, once you choose one, you should stick with it.”
“You have to look at each individual,” added Lisa Harper Mallonee, a registered dietitian and an assistant professor of dental hygiene at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry. “Practice moderation and creating individual, healthy diets.”
