Salmonella Fear To Cause Pepper Shortage

No Direct Cause Yet Found For Salmonella Outbreak

Hidalgo, Texas- As officials continue to search for the cause of the Salmonella illness that is sweeping across America, there is likely to be a shortage of jalapeno and other peppers.

The tests that health officials are performing on jalapeno peppers has caused for the halt of certain shipments of jalapeno peppers being imported from Mexico, and in some cases whole harvests are literally rotting in crates while waiting to be cleared by health officials.

“We want to continue to ship our products but we cant,” said Raul Cano.

Mr. Cano is the co-owner of Grande Produce, in Hidalgo, Texas.

The salmonella outbreak has struck hard, causing well over 1,080 cases in 42 states, including the District of Columbia.

Suspected possible sources that have been announced have been certain types of tomatoes, cilantro, and now peppers.

Federal Food and Drug Administration Officials have been searching hard, and are currently focusing on products and produce that are being shipped from Mexico, causing a bottleneck in the supply of peppers being shipped to the United States.

It has been frustrating for the health officials, as the Saint Paul Salmonella version of the illness continues to strike people in the United States, and Canada.

It is a disease that causes diarrhea, headaches, fever, chills, nausea and stomach cramps.

There have been over 200 people that have required hospitalization for the situation, and the outbreak does not appear to be slowing.
