Washington, D.C.-An environmental citizens group that worked to scientifically test over 1,000 sunscreen products has announced the list of the top 10 effective sunscreens.

Many of the top ten are not the ones that you would expect, but they are the products that were the most effective and had the least amount of other chemicals or contents that could be harmful to the public health.

There are not any of the typical brands in the top ten, and there are several reasons for this.

Some brands do not provide adequate protection, others have insecticide included in them and too much of it is absorbed into the skin, still others have active ingredients that are linked to health hazards.

Only 1 product of the top 144 products recommended by the Environmental Working Group is from market leader companies such as Banana Boat, Coppertone and Neutrogena.

The FDA has not finalized or upgraded the safety requirements for sunscreen standards in the last 30 years.

The overall action of the Food and Drug Administration has been to delay the issue, and many in the public believe it is because the sunscreen industry is putting pressure on the FDA to delay such findings.

The top ten list are, in order as listed by the Environmental Working Group:
