New Results May Help Fight Autoimmune Disease
Oklahoma-There are new results that hold a lot of hope for those that have MS, and that may hope to find a cure or possible preventative agent in the fight against the disease.
Researchers have found that giving the equivalent of 6 to 8 cups of coffee a day to mice prevented them from getting the animal form of Multiple Sclerosis.
The new findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in this week’s edition.
According to Dr. Linda Thompson, from the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, when mice were given coffee equal to about 8 cups of they were able to develop resistance to the disease Multiple Sclerosis.
The coffee prevented the adenosine molecule from binding to its receptor at the cellular level.
Adenosine is one of the four building blocks of DNA.
When the Adenosine could not bind, it prevented the T-Cells from reaching the central nervous system and prevented the chain of events that leads to the animal form of Multiple Sclerosis.
“The basic fact is that for the mice to develop MS adenosine is needed to bind to give the disease causing T Cells a chance to get into the central nervous system.†Said Dr. Thompson.
When the coffee blocks the adenosine, no T – Cells, and no MS.
