Initial Suspicion Of Virus To Hit The State Confirmed

Denver-The first confirmed West Nile Virus cases to hit the state of Colorado have occurred.

The first West Nile case comes from Boulder County, while the other confirmed case was reported in Logan County.

Overall Culex mosquito population numbers are still fairly low, but they are on the increase.

Officials are warning that the number of the Culex mosquito, the ones that transmit the West Nile Virus are fairly low right now but they are on the upswing, and for residents to take precautions.

The next couple of weeks will give experts an idea of how severe or mild the overall threat of West Nile will be for Colorado, and for the rest of the Country.

Last year in 2007 it was the second most active season for West Nile with the 2003 epidemic being the leader in number of cases annually found to date.

Patterns of human infections have emerged, and help researchers to understand.

Nearly 85 percent of the people who get sick from West Nile Virus are bitten between July 1st and August 10th, during the six-week period.

July and August appear to be the highest risk months nationwide to contract the disease.
