Mercury From Dental Tooth Repair May Be Health Threat

Washington, D.C.-After a number of different court cases and considerable pressure the FDA is now saying that the mercury that is present in amalgam dental filling may pose a health risk to developing fetuses and children.

There is no evidence that there is an actual risk to consumers, but after pressure from various groups the FDA has posted what amounts to a warning on its Internet Web site concerning the Amalgam dental type fillings which may be up to one half mercury by weight.

The FDA posting on their Web Sites says, “Dental amalgams contain mercury which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing fetuses and children.”

It also posted” Women who are pregnant and persons that have health conditions sensitive to mercury exposure including people with high mercury bioburdens should discuss other dental options with their health practitioner.”

Several different groups of consumer advocates and different individuals have petitioned and put pressure on the FDA to rule on these types of mercury dental fillings, but up to now the Federal Agency has been reluctant to take a stand against these types of dental amalgam fillings.

To settle the lawsuits that are pending and in response to the pressure the FDA agreed to the postings on its Internet Web site and made the changes earlier this week.
