Former Employee Held To Charges Of Records Access And Sales
Los Angeles- A previous employee of the U.C.L.A. Medical Center was indicted in court on Tuesday on charges that records of well-known patients were accessed and sold illegally.
Lawanda Jackson, age 49 years, was indicted in records breaches and sales of these records illegally to members of the news media. Possible records that are believed to have been accessed include actress Farrah Fawcett, and Maria Shriver, wife of the California Governor.
The arraignment is set for June 9th. This type of records access and illegal sales has become more of a problem in our technological age. This is not the first time that a case has come to the attention of the national media, but it may soon be the most well known, partly because of the possible population of the records that were sold.
Nearly every well-known patient in the last several years has at one time or another passed through the U.C.L.A. medical center, because of its proximity to Hollywood and the center of entertainment. It is believed that the potential damage to the persons who have records stored or whose records are available at the medical center could be hard to calculate.
The celebrities that were exposed and the records sold were not identified, but when asked what she was doing Ms. Jackson, who served as an administrative specialist told the Los Angeles Times that she was merely “being nosy.”
