Toddlers May Be At Risk Without Crucial Vaccines

Washington - A new study has many alarmed who work with toddlers and infants in the United States. As many as 1 in 4 infants are not receiving the right amount of shots, leaving them exposed to a much higher risk of infection, disease and death.

The newest study which was completed recently by the CDC says that young children between the age of 18 and 36 months old are often not meeting their recommended vaccination levels.

In studies done in 2005 among 17,563 children it was found that about 72 percent of these children had the correct vaccinations on time. About 4900 infants and small children were discovered to be missing doses, or not having the proper vaccinations done for them at the recommended times and levels.

“Providers and parents simply have to do better at this vaccination process,” said Elizabeth Luman.

Dr. Luman is a CDC epidemiologist for the Respiratory and Immunization Disease center for the CDC, and a leader of the recent study. The new study says nearly a quarter of all children from 18 months to three years of age are at risk because of not having the right level of vaccininations.

The new study results are scheduled to be published in the June edition of the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.
