Disease Feared In Three Additional Cases

Oswego- A Westbury teenage college student of SUNY Oswego has died and it is believed the death is related to bacterial meningitis. SUNY college officials and Oswego County Health officials reported the death on Saturday but did not furnish a great many details.
A freshman 18 year old that was majoring in Technology, Craig Schiesser was discovered unconscious in his dorm room early Friday morning. After being rushed to the hospital, Schiesser could not be revived, and he was pronounced dead later on at the hospital in Oswego.
Schiesser was a Sigma Tau Chi Fraternity member, and was known to have attended a couple of college related parties in the last several days. “We know he did attend at least two parties recently,†said Julie Harrison-Blissert. Ms. Harrison-Blissert is a spokewoman for the SUNY Oswego Campus.
The way that meningitis is spread is normally through throat or nose excretions of a person who is infected. Only those in close contact should be concerned about transmission of the virus.
Treatment for meningitis is normally a course of special antibiotics.
The disease is not normally spread through casual contact, being in the same rest room, cafeteria or hallway. There have been no additional cases of bacterial meningitis reported on the SUNY campus thus far, but officials are keeping a close watch.
There have been two students of Cornell University who were reportedly hospitalized with cases of Bacterial Meningitis. These three cases have the health officials in two counties worried, and watching to make sure there are not additional cases.
