Lafayette, Indiana – Researchers working out of the University of Purdue have discovered some alarming trends dealing with Artificial Sweeteners. In a series of tests involving rats, the scientists discovered that the rats who consumed Artificial sweeteners tended to be more obese than other rats on the same diet but without the artificial sweeteners.
The study was scoffed at by leading manufacturers of Artificial Sugar Substitutes and Sweeteners. These industry professionals claim that obesity in rats is not the same as causing obesity in humans.
“When we fed yogurt to rats that had artificial sweeteners in it the rates gained far more weight.†Stated one of the story authors. Susan Swithers is an associate Professor of Psychology at Purdue Univeristy.
“They did not receive messages from their brains to signal it was time to stop eating, and so they continued to gain wait,†said Swithers.
In the experiment, rats that consumed food that did not have artificial sweeteners did not gain very much weight. Other rats consuming the same food that was artificially sweet caused a more rapid and pronounced weight gain.
Part of this process seems to be some sort of a subconscious message of how much food will be needed. But the total vote on this issue is not yet in, and research continues.
