New York City – There was a major report issued on Thursday regarding the impact of cigarette sales on human life, and the rate of sales in poor nations. This report was compiled and issued by the World Health Organization.
The report was commissioned by NYC Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s foundation, and uncovered some very troubling facts. The report details a six-point approach to fighting tobacco sales and tobacco use, especially in poor and developing countries.
“The industry of Tobacco sees the World Health Organization as its biggest enemy,†said Mayor Bloomberg. The report was nicknamed Mpower, and talks at great length about the suffering and cost in human lives from tobacco usage.
In the report it suggests enforcing the laws regarding advertising of tobacco to children, intense monitoring of the public usage of tobacco, banning smoking in all public places, raising taxes on cigarettes, and additional programs for stopping smoking.
The WHO report is among the first to look at global data, data from countries besides the United States, and the results are troubling. It also looked at the usage of chewing tobacco in each country, and found that cancer, and other maladies accompanied such use.
The use of tobacco in poor and developing countries is rising even as it is falling in wealthier countries. The efforts of the World Health Organization hope to reverse this trend.
