New York – A cat by the name of Cinnamon, who is an Abyssinian cat from Missouri, has made history as Cinnamon is the first cat to have the majority of her DNA decoded.
The hope is that by decoding the DNA of the cat, researchers will be able to develop new medical treatments which can help save the lives of both cats and humans to fight various diseases.
Cats are being added to the list of animals whose DNA has been totally revealed. Dogs, rats, mice, cows, humans, and chimps have been revealed already as their DNA has all been decoded.
The new DNA report has been published in the journal Genome Research. It revealed about two-thirds of the DNA of Cinnamon.
Stephen J. O’Brien of the National Cancer Institute stated that the rest of the complete DNA results of Cinnamon will be ready to go next year.
20,285 genes were found in the cat which makes up for about 95% of the animal’s full complement according to O’Brien.
This compares to the roughly 25,000 or so genes estimated in humans.
The DNA genome of the cat is made up of around 3 billion building blocks. These blocks reveal information such as gender, eye color, all hereditary information.
The hope is that many diseases on the feline and human front can be tackled using this cat DNA.
