West Nile Strikes In Brooklyn
Brooklyn (EON) – A 41-year-old woman from Brooklyn has been confirmed as the first human case of West Nile virus by the New York City Health Department.
139 mosquito pools across New York City have tested positive thus far this season with West Nile Virus but it has yet to affect any humans.
The 41-year-old woman though became sick in the middle of August. She had a headache, fever, felt tired and weak, and also had muscle pain.
She was put in the hospital on August 25th and is now back home recovering. She has now been confirmed as the first human West Nile case of the season for New York CIty.
Dr. Thomas Friden who is the New York City Health Commissioner stated “I urge all New Yorkers – especially those over 50 – to take step sto prevnt mosquito bites. Wear mosquito repellent and long pants and sleeves if you’re outside in the evening and be sure your window screens are intact. These simple steps can help stop the spread of West Nile virus.
