Washington (EON) – A new study by the Food and Drug Administration has found that there has been a major increase in the adverse events and deaths due to drug reactions.
Since 1998 the number of injuries and deaths from drug reactions has tripled according to the report by the FDA.
Researchers stated that 20% of the drugs made up 87% of the adverse effects or injuries to the patients who took them.
The biggest drugs which harmed the most people included painkillers as well as drugs to treat arthritis which alter the immune system.
Thomas J. Moore who is a drug safety expert stated “The clear finding is that we are losing ground in terms of drug safety, and that ought to be of great concern.”
Adding to the rise is the spike in prescriptions as from 1998 to 2005, the number of prescriptions written grew by 25%.
