Toronto – Too much exposure to sun as a child may have a lasting effect according to a new study released Monday.
New evidence suggests slathering on the sunscreen later in life might not be enough to ward off skin cancer.
That is if you’ve already had too much sun as a child.
Experts say, no matter what, it’s always best to limit your sun exposure and make sure you choose a sunscreen that protects, not only against UVB rays, but also against UVA rays.
AP quotes Dr. Nancy Thomas, a dermatologist at the University of North Carolina who led the UV research as saying, “Sunscreen is imperfect. Schedule activities when UV irradiation is not quite so high.”
The U.S. FDA is working change the way sunblocks are rated to help you choose the most-protective product.
Experts recommend using products with the ingredient Helioplex, a more sun-stable mix of the sunscreen ingredients avobenzone and oxybenzone that seem to provide longer-lasting UVA protection, although they can be more expensive
