Detroit - A meat company linked to an E-coli outbreak in Minnesota is recalling more than 117,000 pounds of beef shipped to Illinois and seven other states, according to a report from he U.S. Department of Agriculture Friday.
PM Beef Holdings is voluntarily recalling the beef trim products.
The USDA says that the meat was sent to distributors and retailers in Illinois, Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Five adults and two children were sickened between April 21 and April 28. Three were hospitalized, but all have been released.
The USDA says the beef trim was turned into ground beef sold under many different retail brand names.
“The stores currently involved include Byerly’s St. Louis Park, Byerly’s Minnetonka, Byerly’s Chanhassen and Lunds Edina. However, we can’t be certain that meat from other stores is not involved, since all of the beef used for ground beef for Lunds and Byerly’s stores comes from a single processing facility,” said Heidi Kassenborg, Acting Director of the Dairy and Food Inspection Division of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).
Symptoms of E-coli include stomach cramps and diarrhea. It can sometimes lead to complications including kidney failure.

To the vegetarian: I’m guessing the meat eaters were saying the same thing about being carnivorous during the spinach debacle last year

Actually, the spinach was only contaminated by E. Coli because of meat production (a nearby farm’s manure was the source), and O157 predominates when the feed is grain and not grass. If no one ate meat, the spinach would not have been tainted in the first place. If the cows were raised organically on grass, their natural food, the O157 would not have been there either.

It is redundant to say that a company is involuntarily recalling beef because the US Government has stripped itself of the right to order a beef recall. Not only can’t the Government order a recall of beef, but they have stripped themselves of the right to even say where contaminated beef has been shipped. These lobbies should get a medal for corrupting the legislature.
