Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist, who played the role of the journalist in the film trilogy ‘the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, died of lung cancer, his agent said on behalf of the family. He was 56 years old.
Michael Nyqvist is best known for his interpretation of investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the original Swedish series of three films from Stieg Larsson’s novels in 2009.
He also took the role the following year for the television series, still alongside Noomi Rapace in the enigmatic Lisbeth. The role of the journalist had been played in the American adaptation by Daniel Craig.
In Hollywood, Michael Nyqvist has held several leading roles, often from bad guys, like the guy who terrorizes Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014), or Tom Cruise’s opponent in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011).
He was also Chancellor of Queen Christine in Mika Kaurismäki’s “Queen of Boys” (2015), based on a screenplay by Quebec dramaturge Michel-Marc Bouchard.
Michael Nyqvist recently appeared in several productions that have not yet been released, including Terrence Malick ( Radegund ) and Thomas Vinterberg ( Kursk ).
He is survived by his wife Catharina and their two children, Ellen and Arthur.
