Harry Styles solo album “Harry Styles” Review

Leaving the bad One Direction, Harry Styles emancipated himself on a solo debut largely inspired by English rock of the seventies. This new project is out today and it is a very nice surprise.

Let us assume without a doubt that everyone knows Harry Styles. Since 2010, the young man has literally grown under the eyes of the whole world. When he was 16 years old, he appeared to the cast of the English show The X Factor, Simon Cowell immediately spotted the potential of the boy and sniffed the good shot by making him the leader of his new boysband. But after several years in the music industry, little Harry became great. And since the announcement of the hiatus of One Direction, the one on which all the expectations are concentrated is him. The singer has been talking for many years, both for his prowess on the microphone as his outfits and his very strong personality . He can also boast a particularly well-filled address book and, far from all this media storm, Has managed to surround himself with the big names in the industry to refine his new solo project. Harry Styles is releasing his debut album today and if everyone already knows his name, he is experimenting for the first time with being completely alone in front of the stage . It was under the Jamaican sun that he flew last autumn to record much of his new songs on the advice of producer Jeff Bhasker (Bruno Mars, Lana del Rey, the Rolling Stones. ..). On the mixing side, the singer called on Mark Stent, who won several Grammy Awards for his work on the albums of Muse, Beyoncé and Madonna. Let’s say that already, things were rather not bad. But then what does it look like,

No name, the album is eponymous. On the artwork, Harry Styles appears from back, almost totally immersed in pink water. A choice he does not want to explain, but justifies in Rolling Stone by quoting Paul Simonon, the bassist of The Clash: “The rose is the only true color of rock’n’roll “. Because indeed, his inspiration, he went to seek it in the roots of English rock. From the Beatles’ britpop to David Bowie’s grandiloquent melodies, Harry Styles pays tribute to the icons of the British scene . The album begins smoothly with ” Meet Me In The Hallway “, melancholic and introspective. From the first listen, it is first the power of his voice that jumps to the ears. His vocal prowess is particularly impressive on Sign of the Times , a mesmerizing ballad of more than five minutes. Borrowing certain rhythmic variations from Bowie, the title fits into the British rock tradition and surprises with its brilliantly executed progression. This first single unveiled in April received excellent reviews and allowed Harry Styles to challenge beyond his loyal Directors. The very beautiful clip made by Woodkid is also the image of his universe: imaginative, poetic and offbeat. With a non-feigned nonchalance, he mixes English elegance and good old vintage rock on ” Carolina ” and then exploits all the nuances of his voice on the pretty ” Two Ghosts “. ” Sweet Creature

Then comes the most interesting part of the album. The mystical intro of ” Only Angel ” is quickly contrasted by a percussive guitar riff. Here again, Harry Styles follows the path of his illustrious elders and the influence of the Rolling Stones is blatant , both in the construction of the piece and in his way of singing. The electric guitars vibrate ever harder on ” Kiwi “, undoubtedly one of the pearls of the album, musically speaking at least. Styles unveils an impressive vocal power and, completely inhabited, displays a musical identity that contrasts royally with the overproduced pop of One Direction. Like calm after the storm, ” Ever Since New York ” comes to slow the tempo. On this delicate folk ballad, Harry Styles seems to be on the surface. Conversely, her sweet voice drags deliciously to the rhythms of the lascivious strings of ” Women “. As comfortable on languorous melodies as on rhythmic compositions, the 23-year-old artist takes on an assumed musical direction that finally reveals his true personality. The disc closes in the same way that it began with ” From The Dining Table “, an intimate statement to a lost love on which the protagonist is again very vulnerable. ” Why will not you say what you want to say?” Even my phone misses your call by the way , “he concluded desperate, accompanied by a single acoustic guitar. From start to finish, the singer’s investment and passion are palpable. Harry Styles delivers an impressive first album, with a palette of admirable vocal performances. Of these ten titles much more introspective, he now seeks to make forget his image of singer blue flower behind that of a romantic and tortured artist. The album consists of obvious but well-constructed love songs and real good surprises . Without being of exceptional depth, the lyrics are generally rather well written and evoke above all the solitude, the identity construction and the void left by a break in love. Certainly, Harry Styles does not invent anything and this album will not revolutionize the genre as it draws evidently in its influences. But the young man proves that he has things to say and for that, has the chance to be able to rely both on the attentive ear of the younger generation and on the approval of rock stars such as Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney . The fans of One Direction are already conquered and the others can at least be pleasantly surprised . The delicate bet of the first album is clearly won and we look forward to the continuation of this solo adventure. The good news is that Harry Styles will be performing at L’Olympia on October 25th . The bad part is that of course it is already complete.
