April the giraffe gives birth
HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. – April the giraffe has finally given birth as millions of people around the world watch online.
The 15-year-old giraffe delivered her calf Saturday in an enclosed pen at the zoo in Harpursville, a rural upstate village about 209 kilometres northwest of New York City, zoo officals reported Saturday.
At least 1.2 million people watched the Adventure Park’s YouTube stream as April the giraffe Gave birth.
This is April’s fourth calf, but Animal Adventure Park’s first giraffe calf. The proud papa is a 5-year-old giraffe named Oliver.
The privately owned zoo began livestreaming from April’s enclosure in February. People around the world have been tuning in daily.
April has her own website and even an apparel line.
The calf, which was expected to weigh about 150lbs (68.04kg) and be about 6ft (1.83m) tall, will be named through a competition, reports The Guardian.
A GoFundMe fundraiser page that initially set a goal of $50,000 sat at more than $125,000 on Saturday morning. The money will be used for the care of the animals.
In February the zoo achieved momentary fame after YouTube abruptly cut the live stream when what the zoo called “animal rights extremists” alleged a violation of the website’s “nudity and sexual content” policy.
