Body washes up on Beckham’s island
The seven-star, ultra exclusive resort, One and Only Reethi Rah in the Indian ocean-based nation of Maldives near the capital city of Male, is known for its beautiful beaches and secluded accommodations. It truly defines the word “getaway” and has been frequented by many celebrities because of its privacy and exquisiteness. But as of this past Sunday, it is now also known for dead bodies washing up in its waters.
The deceased, a currently unidentified Sri Lankan national, was found drifting near a jetty Sunday morning by security staff at the resort. The body has been transported to the local morgue for medical examiners to investigate the cause and timing of death. Officials of the resort have confirmed that the man was not an employee nor a guest of the establishment where English Football star David Beckham, his wife Victoria, and their four children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper have been vacationing over the holiday break. In addition to this unfortunate incident, a supply of fireworks that were to be set off in celebration of the New Year suddenly exploded on Sunday as well. Not only did they detonate suddenly, but before it could extinguished, they ignited a large enough fire to burn down a storage shelter. Luckily, the shelter was the only thing harmed.
This past weekend was truly not a peaceful, relaxing or serene one for any of the guests who pay up to $14,300 a night to stay at the resort. In addition the Beckham clan, other affluent guests include Roman Abrahamovich, owner of the Chelsea Footclub.
The Maldives, as a whole, is a very attractive destination for the well-to-do and is estimated to have welcomed nearly one million vacationers last year alone.
This is the Beckham family’s second visit to the island. And perhaps last.
