Diane Sawyer went on Friday’s “Good Morning America” with an emotional moment that recalling the segment with the greatest impact during her stay at the ABC program: meeting the children who were born after the death of their parents in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.
It was a sobering interlude in two hours of nostalgic videos, celebrities and hugs goodbye tears. The morning newscast devoted almost all transmission to pay homage to Sawyer, who replaces Charles Gibson as anchor of “World News”.
The meeting with the children of 9 / 11 remembered how “Good Morning America” brought them together as babies on the first anniversary of the attacks. Sawyer twins girls held in her arms that day, now 8, came walking with roses in their hands. “Thank you and may (God) bless you,” said Sawyer.
Said Sawyer: “My heart is smiling and the privilege of sharing my mornings with all of you has been more than I can say.”
Beginning Monday, the chief Washington correspondent of the chain, George Stephanopoulos, will come to replace Sawyer.
Sawyer came to “Good Morning America” in January 1999 when the ratings of the program was in a tailspin. What many belived would be a a temporary job ended lasting nearly 11 years.
