Louisville coach Rick Pitino’s admitted extramarital affair is expected to result in recruiting difficulties for the University of Louisville.
Pitino disclosed his affair to the police last week and details were soon divulged to the public. Basketball observers feel that it is likely Pitino’s affair might result in a phenomenon known as “negative recruiting” where the coach’s conduct cast doubt upon the morality of the entire program.
Analyst Brick Oettinger said, “For some people, obviously, it would be a factor because it raises questions of character about the person mentoring your son. So you know it’s going to be used against them.”
If other programs try to use the affair against Pitino, they are running the risk of the plan backfiring and making them look tarnished as well. Many analysts feel that Pitino is likely to weather the controversy due to his history of winning games and his proven success at preparing athletes for the NBA.
Rather than destroying Pitino and the Louisville program, many observers feel that it is more a situation to be endured and managed in as effective a way as possible.
Since allegations against Pitino contain accusations of extortion and an abortion, it remains to be seen what type of fall-out his conduct have on the program and prospective students.
Students from strong pro-life families might very well eschew the program and the coach due to moral issues.
