Last week it was reported that actress Farrah Fawcett was hospitalized again for cancer. The 62 year old actress was first diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006 and the news of her health problems hit the news stands before she was able to tell her friends. She was almost as devastated by the invasiveness of the media as she was about the invasiveness of her disease. Her doctors declared her in remission in February of 2007, but, as is too ofthe the case, the cancer returned a few months later.
Farrah Fawcett was best known for her role as the vivacious Jill Monroe on the TV series “Charlie’s Angels”. One of her producers, Craig Nevius, reported that the actress was hospitalized because of a blood clot that was most likely a side effect of alternative treatment that she received in Germany. She had made a documentary about her treatment in Germany that was shared on various television shows in 2008. She had received radiation and chemotherapy treatments before going to Germany for alternative treatments that included embryonic stem cell therapy that was not available in the United states.
Although she had been separated from her long-time companion, Ryan O’Neal, it has been reported that he and their son, Redmond are with her at the undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles. In recent years it has been their son, Redmond, who has been in the news with repeated drug problems. These have been recurring for several yars, the last arrest, just last week.
Farrah got her start with a bathing suit competition and went to a lead role in “Charlie’s Angels”. Even though she became a household name, she did not like her image of a sex icon and quit the show after the first season. Since she was under contract, she continued to do guest appearnces for the next few years. She has been nominated for an Emmy Award three times for her roles in “The Burning Bed”, “The Guardian”, and “Small Sacrifices”. In 1977 she won the People’s Choice Award for her role in “Charlie’s Angels.” In 1995 she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Farrah was married to Lee Majors in 1973 and divorced in 1982. After that she got together with actor Ryan O’Neal and they were an often seen couple for 17 years before they split up. They had one son together, Redmond. In college she started out as a microbiology major but switched to art in her sophomore year but ended up graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in microbiology. During her career there had been rumors of drug use but they were never founded and the actress and her publiscists explained them because she had a tendency to giggle when she became nervous.
