Chicago (EON) – The Writers Guild of America West and the Writers Guild of America East have authorized a strike. These groups represent over 12,000 writers in Hollywood which could truly have an impact on new television episodes and movies coming out next year.
The strike was authorized by a 90.3% vote from its members. The contract that they currently have with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers is up on October 31st.
This is a huge problem for studios because if they go on strike it could have a major impact the scripts written for television shows which air during February “sweeps.”
The union is demanding that they get paid higher residual fees for films and television shows put out on the DVD format. They also want pay schedules set up for other digital outlets to garner more revenue for them.
Film producers have been putting together piles upon piles of scripts just in the event that a strike actually does occur after the contract is up on October 31st.
