Los Angeles (EON) – A vampire film by the name of 30 Days of Night managed to win the North American box office beating out rivals such as Gone Baby Gone and others to take first place.
30 Days of Night comes from Sony and revolved around vampires who go up to Alaska at a time of year when there are 30 days of 24-hour night. The film took in an estimated $16 million on its opening weekend and was enough to take the top spot.
The top winner last week, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, dropped to second place pulling in another $12.1 million.
The Disney film starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson continues to perform very well as The Game Plan took in another $8.1 million in third, followed by the George Clooney film Michael Clayton with $7.1 million.
The big disappointment for the weekend was the directorial debut of Ben Afleck with Gone Baby Gone. The film is about a case of child kidnapping and had a lot of great buzz going into its opening weekend but only managed to pull in $6 million coming in fifth place.
Total box office gross was $79.7 million collectively, 10% lower than the same weekend last year.
