Boston (EON) – Radiohead is making a bold move in regards to digital downloading of music as they have put their brand new album online for a price which can be decided by each individual consumer.
Radiohead is selling the digital version of “In Rainbows” which began with pre-sales which will last for 10 days as of Monday. They are allowing users to purchase the album for as little as a dollar.
This is the first album away from a major label for the music group. They are stating that if you want to pay one dollar for the album you can, but it will only cover the credit card fee.
The website of the band InRainbows.com stated that “It’s up to you.”
Radiohead has stated that the album will be available for download as of October 10th. They will also have a special-edition box set called Discbox which is set to release on December 3rd and is also up for pre-order.
A CD version of In Rainbows will release in early 2008.
The seven previous albums from Radiohead have been released by EMI’s Capitol Records. The band is extremely popular worldwide as their past three albums have been in the top three in U.S. charts. We will have to wait and see how this plays out as a business move for the band.
