TORONTO – Raccoons are definitely doing everything they can to be as cute as cats. This is the only explanation for this surprise made by one of them to customers at one of the airports in Toronto. A raccoon caused a stir on social media over the weekend when it was filmed poking its head out of the ceiling at Pearson airport.

Travellers pulled out their cellphones and captured images of the critter looking down at them from an open space in the tile above the baggage claim in Terminal 3.

“At Toronto Pearson airport, we spotted this little fellow checking to see who had come off the flight from Edmonton,” tweeted Cameron Graham, a professor at the Schulich School of Business.

That video went viral and was retweeted more than 17,000 times by Sunday.

“Twelve years of research on accounting and poverty: nothing,” Graham said. “One raccoon video: social media gold.”

Photographer Michael Zeiss also captured some video of the raccoon, joking that it was Rocket Raccoon, the surly superhero from the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

“Rocket arrived,” he tweeted.

Pearson spokesperson Natalie Moncur told the Star the raccoon was at the baggage claim Saturday morning, and wildlife staff were attempting to safely trap the raccoon.

“We also have a safety officer on site,” Moncur said via email.
