Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the team has agreed to terms with free agent guard Allen Iverson. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Iverson, the first overall pick by the Sixers in the 1996 NBA Draft, played 10-plus seasons in Philadelphia and ranks second in franchise history in scoring.
“In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time,” said Stefanski.
Iverson (6-0/165) signed as a free agent with Memphis this past September, but parted ways with the Grizzlies after appearing in just three games. He was officially waived on November 16, 2009.
In 1996-97, Iverson took home Rookie of the Year honors with the Sixers. Iverson helped guide Philadelphia to the NBA Finals in 2001, earning the league’s Most Valuable Player award for that season in the process.
A 10-time All-Star and two-time All-Star Game MVP, Iverson has been named to a total of seven All-NBA teams (First Team in 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2004-05; Second Team in 1999-00, 2001-02 and 2002-03; Third Team in 2005-06). He led the NBA in scoring four times as a Sixer, becoming one of only four players in league history to capture four-plus scoring titles.
Now in his 14th NBA season, playing in 889 career games with 877 starts, Iverson is averaging 27.0 points, 6.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.21 steals in 41.4 minutes per game while shooting 42.5% from the floor, 31.3% from 3-point range and 78.0% from the foul line. He is currently tied for the fifth-highest scoring average in NBA history and ranks third among active players.
The 34-year-old has also appeared in 71 career playoff games and owns the second-highest postseason scoring average (29.7 ppg) in NBA history, trailing only Michael Jordan (33.4 ppg).
Iverson was traded by Philadelphia to Denver along with Ivan McFarlin in exchange for Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two future first round picks on December 19, 2006. After just over a season and a half with the Nuggets, Iverson was traded to Detroit on November 3, 2008.
last night in Syndey, an Australia named Danny Green made short work of the legendary Roy Jones Jr.
The battle which lasted only 2: 02 minutes, allowed Green to retained his IBO cruiserweight title.
Within the first minutes of the bout, Green hammered Jones with a vicious punch which initiated the beginning of the end. Smelling victory, Green quickly made short work of Jones, who looked every bit of his 40 years.
“I almost feel bad doing that,” said Green, who has won 28 of his 31 career fights, including 25 by knockout.
“That almost most hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring.”
Jones said: ‘I have got to take my hat off to Danny. I guess now I go back into retirement.’
“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny,” said Jones, whose record now stands at 54 wins and six losses from 60 fights.
While the win could pave the way for a fight against Bernard Hopkins for Green, it likely meant the end of Jones’ career.
Former American sprint queen, Marion Jones, wants to become a professional basketball player, according to media reports Tuesday.
Jones, Who served six months in jail from March to September 2008 for perjury in the a doping scandal and a case of bank fraud involving his former companion Tim Montgomery, told the New York Times that she was working with assistant coaches in San Antonio since October in the hope of playing in Europe shortly before joining the the WNBA in the United Stastes next season.
“I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this,” Jones told the New York Times. “It would give me an opportunity to share my message with young people on a bigger platform. It would give me an opportunity to get a second chance.”
San Antonio Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said that Jones has been working out with his team for the last couple months.
The tentative plan is for her to play in Europe this winter season before joining the Silver Stars next spring.
“I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this,” Jones told reporters. “It would give me an opportunity to share my message to young people on a bigger platform; it would give me an opportunity to get a second chance.”
Jones is no stranger to hoops. She was a star for North Carolina while in college.
A”bad knee” was not painful or challenging enough to make Tiger bow out of golfing events in the past, but suddenly a “minor” vehicle accident has resulted in the shocking announcement that Tiger Woods will not be playing in his own golf tournament this weekend.
This sudden press release is now further titillating the public as well as the tabloid reporters.
Furthermore, Tiger made it clear that he would be out of the golfing competition for the remainder of the year. Unusual? Yes! However, after the recent furor surrounding the latest “Tiger Drive” it is clear that Tiger Woods is going to attempt to “hunker down” and avoid the firestorm of speculation and controversy that began when he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into both a tree and a fire hydrant.
Although it does appear that his physical injuries have been relatively minor, the effects on his well known concentration and laser sharp focus remain to be seen. The tale of Tiger Woods will undoubtedly be chased with a rabid fervor for weeks to come. Tiger and his wife, Elin, have asked for privacy but the chance of them being left alone by reporters and photographers is not likely to happen any time soon.
Serena Williams is used to breaking records. Monday, she broke yet another when she received an $82,500 fine for last September’s tirade at the U.S. Open. Williams also faces the possibility of a one year suspension from the event should she commit another infraction over the next 2 years.
In a decision nearly 3 months in the making, the Grand Slam Committee handed down the record fine, which actually could have been much higher. Under the sport’s code of conduct, a fine of up to $1 million could have been assessed against Williams. Initially fined $175,000, the new figure represents half of that amount, provided Williams avoids future troubles at the event.
Williams says she is, “thankful to have closure on the incident,” which took place during her match against Kim Clijsters of Belgium, and was broadcast on national television and received countless hits on YouTube. Upset by the call of a foot-fault, Williams cursed and physically threatened the lineswoman that made the call.
In spite of the drama on and off the court, it has been an otherwise stellar year for the No. 1 women’s tennis player. Williams broke the record for earnings for a female player by bringing in over $6 million this season. She also published her autobiography, “On the Line,” and purchased a stake in the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
After the Thanksgiving Day win over Texas A&M by the Longhorns one question repeatedly asked is. Will Colt McCoy win the Heisman?
McCoy as quarterback has led the Texas Longhorns in the march to the national championships with a 12-0 record so far this season. With a record like that, it is hard to contemplate that McCoy would not win the Heisman.
The twenty three year old McCoy is a native of New Mexico. He is 6′3″ tall, 205 pounds, and one of the best players in Longhorn history. To top it off he is a good-looking guy and that can’t hurt.
With his record of the most touchdown passes in a season and most yardage thrown plus leading his team to twelve straight wins this year, is there any doubt McCoy will win the Heisman?
This will be the first year that the Heisman votes will be cast totally by electronic vote and all 925 ballots need to be cast by 5:00PM December 7th. As close as the race to the Heisman is this year my bet is that it will come down to the wire for voting, but the question is still will Colt McCoy win the Heisman.
Talks are still going on to resolve issues surrounding 18 year old runner Caster Semenyas future. The IAAF is working behind the scenes to resolve issues about the runner’s gender identity and the runners future career.
Nick Davies a spokesman for the IAAFD said that the parties are in the process of ending complex negotiations, they are “almost there”. Davies said all questions would not be resolved though during a meeting of IAAF’s ruling council in Monaco, which began on Friday.
It is still up in the air about any decision on whether or not IAAF will allow Caster Semenya to keep the 800 meter world title and prize money ($60,000 US dollars from Berlin) that she won back in August and maintaining privacy over gender testing results.
She is still eligible at tis time to keep the title and the prize money. The issue that is being resolved said Nick Davies is whether there is anything that will hinder her competing in races in the future.
In an embarrassing move, France captain Thierry Henry used his hand to control the ball, and won the game against Ireland during the World Cup playoff. He has admitted he used his hands, and agrees that the fair thing to do, is replay the game.
The ruling angered the Football Association of Ireland, who requested a rematch. The FIFA will not agree to the requests and have simply stated that, “the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed”.
Henry has commented that he feels bad that his team has gone on to play in South Africa, but he can do nothing more about it. The coach for the France team agrees it should have been called, but it wasn’t so it is not his place to say sorry. The referee’s decision is final according to the laws of the game. There is plenty of debate about the situation even among the government leaders at the summit in Brussels.
Former Irish captain, Roy Keane has sided with the FIFA in the matter. He states that Ireland has benefited from poor referee calls in the past, and now it is their turn.

“We are still discussing and hopefully we will have a resolution soon.”

The Buffalo Bills have fired their head coach, Dick Jauron, after a terrible start to this season. The Bills are at a 3-6 win-loss for the season. The most recent loss was against the Tennessee Titans, with an embarrassing 41-17.
Jauron has not had a great run with the Bills. His last three seasons have been dismal at best with a 24-33 record. It was inevitable he would get the ax with that kind of performance. Bills owner, Ralph Wilson, says he made the decision in the best interest for the team. Perry Fewell will be stepping in as the head coach of the team.
Fewell had been the defensive coordinator for the team. The team knows him and has shown plenty of confidence in his leadership abilities, explains Wilson. Fewell is the first black coach for the team, and has only 7 games left to prove his stuff. He is the 5th coach in nine years for the struggling team.
The addition of Terrell Owens, who is statistically a great wide receiver, will hopefully give the team a chance at winning. Fewell’s first chance as head coach will come this Sunday when the Bills travel to Jacksonville.
