The David Suzuki Foundation says that the provincial parks of British Columbia are a graveyard for the Grizzlies.

The Foundation claims that hundreds of bears were slaughtered within 60 parks or protected areas of the province over the past 30 years.

A representative of the Foundation, Dr. Faisal Moola, said that people mistakenly believe that with the grizzlies are safe in the parks. He says he is not so and that the bears are no more protected in a park on the roadside.

Foundation and other groups asked the government to ban the hunting of grizzlies, especially in areas as wild as the Great Bear rainforest on the Central Coast.

The government responded by press release, claiming to be devoted to the protection of grizzlies. He recalled that some two million acres are closed to hunting over central and northern coast.

The government also says that hunting is prohibited where populations are threatened grizzlies.

Vancouver Canada native Sarah McLachlan’s song “One Dream” has been chosen as the official theme song for the 2010 Winter Olympics being held in Vancouver Canada starting on February 12th. The song will also be used as the center of the marketing campaign for NBC that is centered on the Olympics.

The 3 time Grammy winner and humanitarian stated in a press release: “I am thrilled to be a part of the Olympics celebration. The games will provide the perfect opportunity to share with the world the hometown I love!” Her record label is also very happy with the choice of “One Dream,” and said that the song was inspired by the Olympic spirit and written for the world’s athletes as they strive to accomplish their dreams.

The video for the song was shot in Vancouver and will be aired during the telecast of the US Figure Skating Championships on January 24th. Though beautiful, the video has drawn some criticism since it was released. Critics state that the video, which focuses mainly on skating, does not really encompass the whole spirit of the Winter Games, leaving out some other events entirely.

This summer McLachlan will perform with the Lilith Fair that she founded. This year the Fair will partner with OneStage.com which will run the “Lilith Local Talent Search.”

Calgary and Mississauga transit authorities have asked Virgin Mobile to pull some of its billboards off their public bus shelters. They feel the bus shelters are no places for pictures of make out sessions even if they do include angels.

The ads have been posted since last November and say “hook up fearlessly” on them to entice people to sign up for the company’s mobile phone plans. Obviously, the U.K. based company is targeting the younger male population with the ads.

Both of these cities though have decided that the aids are a little too racy and that it’s not appropriate for children using the transit system to see them. The pictures feature a young man and women kissing in an elevator while he holds her miniskirt and in the other a different couple make out in an underground garage while his hand is on her thigh. The city had no problem with a third ad not quite as racy of a man and a women embracing in a laundromat.

Mississauga removed the two ads in December Calgary removed them this week also. Virgin will replace them with similar but somewhat more toned down add of two men embracing on a desk. If you are wondering if this is any better for children to be exposed to for the record Virgin Mobile spokesman Nathan Rosenberg said the company just means to depict people expressing their love for each other during the holiday season.

At the World Junior Hockey Championship on Sunday, the Canadian national team further neared their goal of a gold medal by defeating the Swiss 6-1 in front of a crowd of over 13,000.

This sets up the Canadians for a gold medal game against the United States.

If they win, the Canadians will secure their sixth consecutive gold medal in this tournament. Since the tournament began in 1977 no other team has won 6 straight gold medals.

The Canadian team, which is loaded with NHL prospects, has overall won 18 consecutive games and looks set to continue that streak against an equally talented team.

The American team is a cause from concern as they are led by future Toronto Maple Leaf star Jerry D’Amigo. D’Amigo was recently selected by Toronto in the 6th round. D’Amigo should have his hands full with Canadian star, Nazem Kadri, who was the Leaf’s first round selection.

The carjacking carnage that rocked downtown Vancouver Tuesday already resembled a Hollywood crash scene — but Wednesday it was revealed a pair of Canadian actors were the real-life victims.

Vancouver siblings Kris Pope, 31, and Carly Pope, 29, were sitting in traffic in Kris’s black BMW coupe when a pedestrian randomly approached and started shouting at Kris and pounding on the hood of the car, their father Dale Pope told the Vancouver Province Wednesday.

Witnesses say Kris Pope was seen getting out of his BMW to speak to witnesses across the street when the carjacker jumped into the car with Carly Pope still inside.

As soon as he saw, both the witnesses and Kris ran back to stop him. With the car door still open and a struggle ensuing in the driver’s seat, the carjacker then stomped on the gas pedal and reversed the car into busy oncoming traffic dragging its victims along.

Carly Pope, who starred in the short-running TV show Popular, has done guest spots on 24 and has been in several feature films.

Both were injured but have been released from hospital, along with the 24-year-old male witness police say tried to stop the carjacking.

On December 16, 2009, at about 7:30 in the morning, a news helicopter crashed near a Montreal highway. Antoine Leger, the pilot of the helicopter and his passenger, journalist Réjean Léveillé, survived the crash. It was due to the quick thinking of the pilot that helped save their lives. He was able to guide the helicopter down safely after it lost power.

Leger was able to get out out of the wreckage himself, but Leveille was trapped in the cockpit between a fence and some wires. When firefighters got to the scene, they were able to use portable heaters to keep him warm and to prevent him from getting hypothermia. Once they freed Leveille from the helicopter, both men were rushed to the hospital. They were reported to be conscious and in stable condition. Leveille had injuries to his chest and pelvis and minor lacerations, but his injuries were not life threatening.

The exact cause of the crash is undetermined, but it is being investigated. It does appear that it was some type of technical malfunction. The helicopter was transported to Ottawa for further analysis.

Witnesses said that the accident could have been worse, if it was not for the pilot’s quick actions to bring the helicopter down safely.

Just before the holidays, British Airways employees have just said yes in a strong majority to go on strike.

The 13 000 members of cabin crew for British Airways have voted to strike beginning December 22, for a period of 12 days. The union says that 92.5% of members voted in favor of the strike.

Thousands of holiday travelers may therefore not be able to fly with the carrier because union members are unhappy with the layoffs and changes in working conditions.

The union alleges that the changes including a freeze of wages and conditions less favorable for new employees were imposed illegally.

British Airways seeks to reduce its costs while demand for air travel is low during recessions.

The company lost 217 million pounds (C $ 374 billion) during the six months ended September 30. She announced the layoff of 4900 workers by 2010.

The company is said to be in the process of upgrading its flights to the strike period and hopes to announce the new when it becomes available. It says it will contact customers as soon as possible.

Last November, British Airways and its Spanish counterpart Iberia signed a preliminary merger agreement. The merger should be completed in 2010, making British Airways became the majority shareholder in Iberia.

Good news for fans of Google street view! Google has added 9 new Canadian cities to their street view mapping service. They have added Victoria, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Edmonton as well as Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Google also added Sudbury, Ontario, Sherbrook, Quebec and St. Johns.

In October the cities of Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Bringing the total amount of Canadian cities represented to 20. Google street view, gives a 360 degree eye level view of landmarks, streets, houses and businesses taken from photographs of several views of a particular landmarks.

Since 2007 Google has been gathering pictures of Canadian cities. Photographs are collected by cars that drive around with cameras mounted on top of them.

Google began its street view program in 2007 and has since added over 250 cities from around the world! Canada’s Privacy Commissioner raised privacy issues concerning people’s faces that get caught walking down the street or license plates of vehicles parked or driving down the street.

To help ease people’s concerns, Google has decided to blur both people’s faces as well as vehicle license plates.

Google has also begun taking pictures and adding them to the street view of the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Venues in Whistler and Vancouver will be the first for the Canadian specialized street view section.
