What would the holidays be like without pumpkin pie? News media around the country have headlined articles that state, “Pumpkin Pie Shortage Expected.” This has caused shoppers to rush to the stores to try to stock up on the pumpkin pie products before stores run out. The reason for the shortage is due to the poor harvest season which had heavy rain and workers were not able to pick pumpkins. The longer the pumpkins sit in the muddy fields, the more they deteriorate.
Nestle is the largest national brand for canned pumpkin products. It owns the Libby’s brand of pumpkin pie. Grocery stores think they may have enough of the canned pumpkin products for Thanksgiving, but may find their shelves empty before the holiday season is over. More and more people have been buying pumpkin products lately as people are finding out that pumpkin products are good for your health.
There are a few alternatives in case you can’t find the pumpkin products on the shelves. Fresh pumpkins can be used or even butternut squash. Butternut squash has a taste similar to sweet potatoes. You may even want to try making a different type of pie for the holiday season.
