The reason for the shortage is due to the poor harvest season which had heavy rain and workers were not able to pick pumpkins. Grocery stores think they may have enough of the canned pumpkin products for Thanksgiving, but may find their shelves empty before the holiday season is over. There are a few alternatives in case you can’t find the pumpkin products on the shelves. Fresh pumpkins can be used or even butternut squash. Butternut squash has a taste similar to sweet potatoes. You may even want to try making a different type of pie for the holiday season.
